Swimming and Diving Begins the Season with Meets Against Bucknell and Boston University

LEWISBURG, Pa. – The University of Richmond swimming and diving team got the 2018-19 season started Saturday afternoon at Bucknell University. The Spiders competed against the Boston University Terriers and the host Bucknell Bison. Richmond dropped both matchups, falling to Bucknell, 176-123 and Boston University, 176-122.
The 200-meter medley relay began the season strong as the quartet of Hannah Gouger (Cockeysville, Md.), Maggie Purcell (Southampton, N.Y.), Morgan Soulia (Wexford, Pa.) and Eliza Manning (Frederick, Md.) turned in a time of 1:47.24 to lead all competitors. Also turning in top times in their heats were newcomers Manning and Purcell. Manning finished the 100-meter freestyle with a time of 51.99. Purcell finished the 200-yard breaststroke at 2:21.24
Richmond finished with seven competitors finishing in the top three of their events. Nicole Piercy (Newport News, Va.) notched a third-place finish in the 1000-meter freestyle with a time of 1:45.91. Manning added a 1:53.63 time in the 200-meter freestyle, good for third place. Gouger competed in the 50-yard freestyle, earning a 24.34 time, good for second as well as finishing second in the 200-meter backstroke with a time of 2:03.68. Soulia added top three finishes in the 200-meter individual medley at 2:08.56, and the 500-yard freestyle at 5:10.22, finishing second and third, respectively. The 400-meter freestyle relay team of Gouger, Purcell, Kristine Mihm (Wexford, Ma) and Manning finished in second with a time of 3:33.40.
Maddy Chao (Niskayuna, N.Y.) and Alex Beran (Basking Ridge, N.J.) turned in a pair of top three finishes in the dive competition. Chao notched a score of 233.20 in the 1-meter dive, good for third place. Beran finished with a score of 244.90 in the 3-meter event to earn second.
Six Spiders made their collegiate debuts in the meet as Purcell, Mihm, Jenna Carastro (Vineland, N.J.), Grace Palfreyman (Bridgewater, N.J.), Ashley Meyer (Glen Allen, Va.), Emma Yeakley (Cornelius, N.C.).
The Spiders are back in action next weekend as they will host the Richmond Duals, Friday and Saturday. The diving competition will take place in the Robins Center Natatorium, with the swimming competition at the Collegiate School Aquatic Center.
