Swimming and Diving Defeats Davidson in the First Round of the Richmond Duals

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The Richmond Spider swimming and diving team defeated the Davidson Wildcats in the first round of the Richmond Duals Friday evening. The Spiders picked up their first win of the young season, 173-112. The Spiders move on to face the Duquesne Dukes, who defeated the George Mason Patriots, 184-115.
The Spiders got first place finishes from several competitors to lead the team. Hannah Gouger finished first in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 24.29 and took first in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:03.41. Freshman Maggie Purcell earned the win with a time of 2:21.95 in the 200-yard breaststroke. Maddy Chao earned the top spot in the 1-meter diving with a score of 253.45.
Other key point earners were the 200-yard medley relay teams. Two teams earned top three finishes. The grouping of Ellie Ronan, Purcell, Eliza Manning and Mallory Shake finished second with a time of 1:48.02. Gouger, Morgan Soulia, Jenna Carastro and Kristine Mihm were right on their heels, coming in in third place with a time of 1:48.31. Ronan turned in a second-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke at 58.24. Soulia earned a third-place finish in the 1650-yard freestyle with a time of 17:59.17. Lauren Wallace notched a third-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:55.42. Manning turned in a time of 58.28 in the 100-yard backstroke. Ronan notched a third-place finish in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:06.68. Chao added a score of 230.70 in the 3-meter diving event, good for third place.
The Spiders move on to take on Duquesne tomorrow morning. The swimming will take place at SwimRVA with the diving competition being hosted at the Robins Center Natatorium.
