DULUTH, Ga. – One senior, one sophomore, and two freshmen combined for one of the best team performances in Spider golf history Monday afternoon in the second round of the Autotrader Collegiate at Berkeley Hills Country Club. Senior Ben Wanichek (70, -2), sophomore Michael Baker (68, -4), and freshmen Michael Childress (70, -2) and Jordan Secret (72, E) combined for an eight-under par 280 in Monday afternoon's second round. The score, which tied for the sixth-lowest 18-hole score in program history, shot the Spiders up the leaderboard and into sixth place at the end of the first day of the Autotrader Collegiate, which features a strong 12-team field.
"This afternoon really wasn't that much different than this morning's round, we just had a couple more putts drop and made fewer costly mistakes," said head coach Adam Decker. "The greens demand a lot of precision and being on the correct side of the hole leads to good birdie opportunities."
Wanichek and Baker are tied for eighth on the individual leaderboard at 138 (-6), a figure that's tied for the ninth-lowest 36-hole score in Spiders history. Wanichek's first-round 68 (-4), the 60th round of his collegiate career, was the first time he'd shot in the 60s at Richmond. Baker recorded his first two career rounds under par on Monday, shooting 70 (-2) in the morning and 68 (-4) in the afternoon.
Freshman Michael Childress is tied for 36th at 145 (+1) after his two-under 70 Monday afternoon moved him 11 spots up the leaderboard. Fellow freshman Jordan Secret is tied for 51st at 148 (+4).
Playing as an individual, sophomore Will Tamplin shot a career-low 69 on Monday morning and currently sits tied for 32nd at 144 (E).
Georgia Southern leads the event at 547 (-29), trailed by UNCG at 552 (-24). The Spiders (569, -7) sit just four shots out of third place, currently held by Samford (565, -11). Decker said the Spiders focus for tomorrow "is for all five guys to be in the game. Hitting fairways gives you the ability to control the ball a little better on the approach shots. It's going to take a total team effort to post a solid number and climb up the leader board."
The event will conclude with 18 holes on Tuesday, with tee times starting at 8:05 AM. Live scoring (every three holes) is available on golfstat.com.
