Swimming and Diving Takes Richmond Duals with Win Over Duquesne

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond swimming and diving team completed the two-meet sweep of the Richmond Duals Saturday afternoon, defeating the Duquesne Dukes, 167-132. The Spiders improve their dual meet record to 2-2 on the season.
The Spiders were dominant in the pool, taking first place in 11 events. The 400-yard medley relay team of Hannah Gouger (Cockeysville, Md.), Maggie Purcell (Southampton, N.Y.), Lauren Wallace (Charlotte, N.C.) and Morgan Soulia (Wexford, Pa.) took the top spot with a time of 3:51.62. Gouger added first place finishes in the 100-yard backstroke (55.36), 200-yard backstroke (2:02.43) and teamed up with Purcell and Soulia, as well as Eliza Manning (Frederick, Md.) to take the 200-yard freestyle relay. Manning earned first-place finishes in the 200-yard freestyle (1:53.44), 50-yard freestyle (23.95) and the 100-yard freestyle (52.35). Purcell and Soulia each added two more first place finishes. Purcell took the 100-yard breaststroke (1:05.05) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:20.10). Soulia took the 200-yard butterfly (2:07.46) as well as the 500-yard freestyle (5:08.24).
Adding to the Spiders point total were swimmers Nicole Piercy (Newport News, Va.), Mallory Shake (Lexington, Ky.) and Wallace. Each earned top three finishes in their events. Piercy earned the third spot in the 1650-yard freestyle (17:58.89) as well as the 400-yard individual medley (4:37.49). Shake added a third-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle (54.02) with Wallace earning a third-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly (58.40).
Divers Alex Beran (Basking Ridge, N.J.) and Maddy Chao (Niskayuna, N.Y.) each added top three finishes. Chao finished in second in the 1-meter dive event (245.65) and third in the 3-meter dive (238.95). Beran finished third in the 1-meter dive with a score of 229.15.
The Spider dive team is back in action in just over two weeks as the divers will compete at East Carolina on November 3. The complete team will be back in action November 15-17 as part of the Patriot Invite, hosted by George Mason.
