Spiders’ Strong Effort Comes Up Short In 2-0 Loss To UMass
10/05/2018 | Field Hockey
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond field hockey team held visiting UMass just four shots on Friday afternoon, but the Minutewomen converted on two of them and held the Spiders scoreless on their way to a 2-0 Atlantic 10 win at Crenshaw Field.
Â
The game opened with back-and-forth play, and neither team managed a shot until Nealy Henderson sent the ball over the cage in the 23rd minute.
Â
The Minutewomen got on the board in the 27th minute of play on their second penalty corner attempt of the day. Three of the four shots taken on the day by UMass came over less than a four-minute span in the first half.
Â
After going into the break with a 1-0 lead and a 3-2 shot advantage, the Minutewomen doubled their lead eight minutes into the second half on a penalty stroke. The stroke would be the visitors' lone shot of the half.
Â
Down 2-0 early in the second half, the Spiders turned up the offensive pressure, holding UMass without a shot while totaling 13 of their own through the remainder of the game and finishing with 16 shots.
Â
The Spiders' best chance came in the 60th minute, when they totaled three consecutive penalty corners. Despite successful shots on all three attempts by Steffie Bongers and Amanda DaSilva, Richmond could not find the back of the cage.
Â
Henderson and Addie Nash led the Spiders in shots with four apiece. Emily Braunewell finished the game with one save in goal.
Â
The Spiders return to action at Crenshaw Field on Sunday, October 7, when they wrap up nonconference play against Towson. Game time is set for 12 p.m.
