Swimming and Diving Competes at the Patriot Invite

FAIRFAX, Va. – The University of Richmond swimming and diving team was back in the pool Thursday afternoon at the Patriot Invite, hosted by George Mason University. The Spiders are one of nine teams competing in the three-day event, finishing the first day with a score of 96, good for eighth place.
The dive team had two finish in the top eight in the 3-meter finals. Sydney Weiskopf (Clifton Park, N.Y) led the divers with a preliminary score of 227.20 in the 3-meter event, before earning a 252.35 tally to earn the second-place spot. Alex Beran (Basking Ridge, N.J.) added a sixth-place finish in the same event with a score of 222.90 in the preliminary round before earning a score of 210.45 in the finals. Maddie Chao (Niskayuna, N.Y) finished just outside the finals qualifiers, earning a score of 205.10 in the preliminary round. Emma Yeakley (Cornelius, N.C.) added a 201.25 score but failed to qualify for the finals.
In the 200-yard freestyle relay, the team of Eliza Manning (Frederick County, Md.), Hannah Gouger (Cockeysville, Md.), Morgan Soulia (Wexford, Pa.) and Mallory Shake (Lexington, Ky.) earned a time of 1:36.85, good for seventh place in the event. Manning earned a seventh-place finish in the 200-yard individual medley final. She turned in a time of 2:06.34 in the A-final, good for seventh place. Soulia earned a 14th-place finish with a time of 2:08.41.
In the 50-yard freestyle, Gouger was the top Spider, turning in a time of 23.93. The time is a career-best for the junior, and the best of any Spider this season, edging Manning's time of 23.95 on the second day of the Richmond Duals. The 400-yard medley relay team earned a 12th-place finish as the quartet of Gouger, Soulia, Lauren Wallace (Charlotte, N.C.) and Manning turned in a 3:55.67 time.
The Spiders are back in action tomorrow morning with the preliminary rounds beginning at 10 a.m. The Friday schedule will feature preliminary races in the 400 individual medley, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 back stroke as well as the women's 1-meter prelims and finals. The night session will feature the finals of the morning's races, with additions of the 200 medley relay and the 800 freestyle relay.
