Spiders Bow Out of A-10 Tournament with 3-1 Loss To No. 10 Saint Joseph’s

MERION STATION, Pa. – The University of Richmond field hockey team battled with the No. 10 team in the country on Friday afternoon, but the Spiders could not overcome a first half flurry by the Saint Joseph's offense, falling 3-1 in the Atlantic 10 semifinal round.
"The progress we've made as a team this season has been phenomenal," head coach Jamie Montgomery said after the game. "I'm proud of the team for putting themselves in the position to compete in this game, and for playing their hearts out today."
The Hawks got on the board less than 10 minutes in off of a corner play, before doubling their lead in the 15th minute on a breakaway.
Saint Joseph's continued with the offensive pressure, scoring their third goal of the half with just under 10 minutes remaining to head into the break with a 3-0 advantage.
Just when the game looked out of reach, the Spiders drew a penalty corner and Steffie Bongers scored off Olivia Frazier's first career assist to cut into the Saint Joseph's lead.
Despite an increase in offensive chances for the Spiders, the one goal would not be enough, as the Hawks went on to take a 3-1 win and advance to the A-10 Championship Game on Saturday afternoon.
Goalkeeper Emily Braunewell finished the day with five saves in cage for the Spiders, while Bongers was named to the All-Tournament Team for her efforts on both the offensive and defensive ends.
