Spiders Lose To Virginia Tech At UCF Thanksgiving Tournament

ORLANDO, FL – The University of Richmond women's basketball was within 10 points after two quarters against Virginia Tech but were outscored 46-28 in the final two Sunday afternoon in the finale of the UCF Thanksgiving Tournament. Freshman Claire Holt (Hoover, Ala.) finished with a season-high 13 points.
The Spiders fall to 1-6 on the season and Virginia Tech stays undefeated at 7-0 with the win. Richmond shot 35.9 percent from the field off 23-for-64. UR hit 5-for-16 from downtown and only committed nine turnovers in the loss.
Junior Jaide Hinds-Clarke (Westwood, N.J.) added eight points and grabbed four rebounds. Graduate student Daijia Ruffin (Louisville, Ky.) finished with 10 points.
Virginia Tech's Trinity Baptiste scored 24 points off the bench and had 11 rebounds. Regan Magarity also posted a double-double off 18 points and 15 rebounds for the Hokies.
Virginia Tech took an early 6-0 lead in the first quarter. The Spiders answered with back-to-back buckets from Hinds-Clarke and Ruffin to cut the lead to 6-4 with 6:01 remaining in the quarter. The Hokies went on a 10-0 run to take a 16-4 lead off a layup by Rachel Camp. Virginia Tech would take a 22-8 lead into the second quarter.
Richmond cut into the lead scoring the first four points of the second quarter. With 5:53 on the clock, Virginia Tech pulled ahead 31-12 off a three-pointer by Dara Mabrey. The Spiders would not go away as Holt heated up with 11 points helping Richmond cut the lead to 16 points at 36-20 with 2:30 remaining.
Richmond ended the second quarter on a 7-0 run to get within 10 points at 39-29 off a jumper by Jayana Ervin (Tacoma, Washington). Holt's 11 points after two quarters is a season-high. The Spiders outscored Virginia Tech 21-17 in the second quarter.
Virginia Tech went ahead 59-44 after winning the third quarter 20-15. The Spiders got within 11 points at 48-37 off a jumper by freshman Imani Mustaf (Washington, D.C.). The Hokies went back up by 18 points off a layup by Trinity Baptiste with 3:41 left in the third quarter. Sophomore Alex Parson (North Chesterfield, Va.) answered back with a corner three-pointer. Richmond got within 13 points on a layup by Hinds-Clarke at the 2:14 mark.
In the fourth quarter, Virginia Tech scored 26 points mostly from the free throw line and cruised to an 85-57 win.
Richmond will have a week off before playing in-state rival William & Mary on the road on Dec. 5 at 7 p.m. in Williamsburg.
