Richmond Falls Against Georgetown In Season Opener

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's basketball team fell behind early and couldn't recover in the 2018-19 season opener against Georgetown, 73-53, Tuesday night at Robins Center.
Richmond finished the game shooting 17-for-56 (30.4 percent) from the field, while Georgetown was 32-for-69 (46.4 percent). The Spiders played much better in the third and fourth quarters outscoring the Hoyas, 37-32. Richmond scored a game-high 21 points in the third quarter.
Junior Jaide Hinds-Clarke (Westwood, N.J.) led the team with 11 points and five rebounds in the loss. Hinds-Clarke scored all 11 points in the third and fourth quarters. Freshman Emma Squires (Kingston, Mass.) scored all seven of her points in the third and fourth quarters.
Sophomore Alex Parson (North Chesterfield, Va.) finished with seven points and two assists. Junior Jayana Ervin (Tacoma, Wash.) posted seven points and three steals in her Spider debut. Sophomore Kailyn Fee (Vienna, Va.) scored seven points off the bench and hit two three-pointers.
Georgetown jumped ahead early to take a 10-3 lead on the Spiders with 3:50 remaining in the first quarter. The Hoyas continued to build their lead ending the quarter on a 10-4 run to pull ahead 20-7 after one quarter. Richmond shot 2-for-18 in the first quarter and only hit 1-of-6 from the three-point line.
In the second quarter, Georgetown kept making shots to increase its advantage to 15 points at 24-9 off a jumper by Dionna White with 6:55 on the clock. The Hoyas held Richmond to just nine second quarter points and took a 41-16 halftime lead.
Richmond started to cut the lead in the third quarter thanks to a four-point play from Fee off a made three-pointer. The Spiders shot 7-for-12 (58.3) in the third quarter and went 2-for-4 from downtown. Georgetown kept their lead by winning the quarter by a score of 22-21.
UR made a late run scoring nine-straight points capped by a layup from Ervin with 4:49 remaining. Richmond cut the lead to 65-48, but Georgetown answered with two free throws to stop the run. Freshman Claire Holt (Hoover, Ala.) made two free throws to make the final score 73-53.
Richmond was outrebounded 45-31 and were outscored 10-5 on fast break points. The Hoyas scored 17 points off 13 Spider turnovers.
Richmond will host Fairfield on Friday, Nov. 9, at 2 p.m. inside the Robins Center.
