Football Closes Out Home Schedule Saturday Hosting No. 16 Maine On Senior Day

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond football team closes out the home portion of the 2018 schedule Saturday afternoon as the Spiders welcome in No. 16 Maine for Colonial Athletic Association action. Game time is set for 3 p.m.at Robins Stadium.
Prior to the game, the Spiders will honor their academic senior and fifth-year senior class with a pregame Senior Day ceremony. Additionally at halftime, Richmond is honoring the 10-year anniversary of the 2008 National Championship team. The 2008 Spiders posted a 13-3 overall record and won the final nine games of the year to claim the program's first national title.
Saturday's game will be broadcast on NBC Sports Washington+ and online via SpiderTV will Bob Black and Chris Anderson on the call. The game has also been picked up by NBC Sports Bay Area, NBC Chicago+ and SNY (delay). The game will be audio broadcast on ESPN Richmond and TuneIn with Robert Fish and Matt Smith on the call. Saturday's game marks the 27th meeting all-time between Richmond and Maine. The Spiders and Black Bears have been evenly matched in series history with each team winning 13 games. In fact, the teams are 7-7 all-time in games in Richmond and 6-6 all-time in games in Orono. The Spiders and Black Bears will be playing for the first time since the 2015 season when Richmond captured a 48-17 victory at Robins Stadium. The Spiders out-scored Maine 28-10 in the second half as former Spider Kyle Lauletta had five touchdowns in the game -- four through the air and one on the ground.
The Spiders enter Saturday's game with a 3-6 overall record and a 1-5 mark in CAA action. Richmond is coming off a loss over Villanova where it committed seven turnovers on the day. Redshirt sophomore quarterback Joe Mancuso (Blairsville, Ga.) leads the team in rushing with 332 yards and is second in passing with 1,121 yards. Mancuso will miss Saturday's game due to an injury.
Redshirt junior quarterback Kevin Johnson (Atlanta, Ga.) and redshirt sophomore Reid Chenault (Goochland, Va.) are competing for the starting spot this week. The game's starter will be a game time decision. Johnson has passed for 1,269 yards but missed three games himself due to injury before coming on in relief against Villanova but throwing a pair of interceptions. Chenault connected on 8-of-10 for 58 yards and a touchdown in relief against the Wildcats.
Senior wide receiver Tyler Wilkins (Richmond, Va.) enters the game with 34 receptions for 516 yards this season. Wilkins moved into ninth place in Richmond football history for receiving yards against Albany with 2,115 yards during his four-year career.
Maine enters Saturday's game with a 6-3 overall record and is tied atop the CAA with a 5-1 league mark. The Black Bears have an FBS win on their resume, picking up a win over Western Kentucky earlier this season. Maine has posted wins over New Hampshire, Villanova, Rhode Island, Towson and Albany while suffering a road loss at William and Mary.
The Black Bears enter the game ranking second in all of FCS and first in the CAA in sacks with 37 total. Sterling Sheffield leads the way with a CAA-leading 8.5 sacks on the season while Kayon Whitaker is second on the team with 7.5 and Deshawn Stevens is third at 7.0 sacks.
Maine quarterback Chris Ferguson has completed 128-of-219 from the air for 1,438 total yards with 10 touchdowns and seven interception. Earnest Edwards has caught 35 targets for 568 yards and five touchdowns while Micah Wright is second on the team with 34 catches for 377 yards and four scores. Ramon Jefferson leads the Black Bears on the ground with 515 yards on 87 carries, scoring five touchdowns.
