Richmond Faces Oldest Rival William & Mary

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's basketball team will face its oldest rival William & Mary on Wednesday, Dec. 5, at 7 p.m. inside Kaplan arena.
The Spiders (1-6) are hoping to snap a three-game losing streak with six non-conference games remaining until Atlantic 10 play begins against Rhode Island on Saturday, Jan. 5, at 2 p.m.
LAST TIME OUT
The University of Richmond women's basketball team fell to 1-6 on the season after dropping both games at the UCF Thanksgiving Tournament to UCF (L, 70-48) and against Virginia Tech (L, 85-57). The Spiders battled in both games but ultimately ran out of gas. In the game against UCF, sophomore Alex Parson scored a team-best 14 points off 4-for-7 shooting from downtown. Freshman Aniyah Carpenter, starting for the first time in her career, finished with 11 points off three three-pointers.
The Spiders were outscored 43-29 in the third and fourth quarters by UCF. Their full-court press caused Richmond to make 25 turnovers, a season-high. Freshman Imani Mustaf finished with a career-high three blocks in 19 minutes.
In the finale against Virginia Tech, freshman Claire Holt scored a season-high 13 points off the bench and Daijia Ruffin added 10 points. Richmond was again outscored 46-28 in the third and fourth quarters but only committed nine turnovers against the Hokies.
STARTING LINEUPS
The Spiders have had five different starting lineups in their seven games and only two have started all seven games in sophomore Alex Parson and junior Jaide Hinds-Clarke. Freshmen Emma Squires and Molly Mraz have started five games, Daijia Ruffin and Jayana Ervin have started four games. Freshman Aniyah Carpenter has started two games and junior Amy Duggan with one start. With so many new faces, Richmond hasn't had a set rotation having played 14 different players this season.
HOLT SCORES CAREER-HIGH AGAINST VIRGINIA TECH
Freshman guard Claire Holt scored a career-high 13 points against Virginia Tech. Holt was 5-for-12 from the field and hit two three-pointers off the bench. Holt played 24 minutes and led the Spiders in the second quarter scoring 11 of her 13 points to close within 10 points after two quarters. Holt has scored 25 points (8.3 per game) in her last three games after only scoring three in her previous four games.
RUFFIN PROVIDING SPARK
Graduate student Daijia Ruffin has scored 41 of her 47 points in her last four games, including a season-high 17 points against Maryland Eastern Shore. Ruffin has been inserted into the starting lineup for the past three games and has scored 17, 12, 2 and 10 points. She is averaging 10.2 points per game in her last four games and has dished out 12 assists (3.0 per game). Ruffin is fourth on the team in scoring at 6.7 points per game.
LAST TIME VS. WILLIAM & MARY
The last time these two teams met the Tribe came away with a 78-64 win at the Robins Center on Nov. 29, 2017, after senior Micaela Parson scored a game-high 21 points and grabbed six rebounds. Kailyn Fee added 11 points off three three-pointers and Amy Duggan scored seven points in the loss. The Spiders were outscored 25-14 in th second quarter and never came back. Richmond leads the all-time series 90-24, their 114 games is the most between any opponent the Spiders have faced in school history. The first meeting came back in 1920 and the Tribe have won two-straight meetings in 2016 and 2017.
