Spiders Fourth Quarter Comeback Falls Short At William & Mary

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The University of Richmond women's basketball trailed by three points with 4:48 remaining but fell short on the road against William & Mary, 65-55, Wednesday night at Kaplan arena.
Graduate student Daijia Ruffin (Louisville, Ky.) scored a team-best 16 points off the bench and finished with a career-high five steals. Junior Jaide Hinds-Clarke (Westwood, N.J.) added 11 points and grabbed seven rebounds off the bench.
Richmond falls to 1-7 on the season and William & Mary improves to 5-3 with the win. The Spiders shot a season-high 38 percent from the field off 19-for-50 and shot a season-high 81.3 percent from the free throw line off 13-of-16.
UR forced the Tribe to commit 18 turnovers and swiped a season-high 14 steals. The Spiders held William & Mary's best player Bianca Boggs to a season-low eight points.
Richmond made a late run in the fourth quarter after a fast break layup from Ruffin cut the Tribe's lead to 55-52 with 4:48 left in the game. William & Mary answered with back-to-back buckets to build its lead back to seven points at 59-52.
The Tribe scored again before Ruffin scored on a steal to make the score 61-54 with 1:47 on the clock. The Spiders tried to put the pressure on but William & Mary was able to come away with a 65-55 win hitting a couple of free throws down the stretch.
William & Mary jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first quarter before Hinds-Clarke got Richmond on the board with a layup.
The Spiders tied the game at 9-9 after a 7-0 run on a three-pointer by freshman Claire Holt (Hoover, Ala.) with 4:31 remaining in the quarter. The Tribe would score the final four points of the first quarter to go ahead 13-9.
In the second quarter, sophomore Alex Parson (North Chesterfield, Va.) opened with a three-pointer to get within one point at 13-12. William & Mary went on an 8-1 run off a three-pointer by Harper Birdsong to lead 21-13 with 7:16 on the clock.
Ruffin went to work scoring all of her seven points in the second quarter as Richmond cut the lead to 26-23 with 1:18 remaining. With 21 seconds left in the quarter, Holt made two free throws to get the Spiders down one at 28-27 but the Tribe hit a jumper at the buzzer by Libby Underwood.
Richmond went 9-for-10 from the free throw line in two quarters and outrebounded the Tribe 18-14.
William & Mary had a strong third quarter outscoring Richmond 22-16 to take a nine-point lead into the fourth quarter at 52-43.
Richmond returns home to host Howard on Saturday, Dec. 8, at 2 p.m. inside the Robins Center.
