Late Run Surges Richmond Over Howard, 67-60

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's basketball team went on a 9-0 run to end the game to earn a comeback 67-60 win against Howard Saturday at the Robins Center. Sophomore Alex Parson (North Chesterfield, Va.) hit a huge three-pointer with 1:26 remaining to give the Spiders a lead they wouldn't relinquish.
In a game that featured 10 lead changes and eight ties, Richmond scored the final nine points to come away with the victory. The Spiders improve to 2-7 on the season and Howard falls to 5-3 with the loss. UR shot a season-high 43.4 percent off 23-for-53 and a season-high 52.4 percent from downtown off 11-of-21 shooting.
Sophomore Kailyn Fee (Vienna, Va.) led the team with 16 points off 6-for-12 shooting scoring all 16 points in the first two quarters. Parson finished with 15 points, scoring all 15 in the third and fourth quarters. The Spiders had 29 bench points thanks to a solid performance from junior Jayana Ervin (Tacoma, Washington) with 12 points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals.
Freshman Madelyn Neff (Hayward, Wis.) scored a career-high 10 points going 3-for-3 from the three-point line.
Richmond went on a 7-2 run to open the fourth quarter to tie the game at 49-49. The Spiders increased their lead to 56-51 off a Parson three-pointer with 5:53 left in the game. The Bison responded with five-straight points to even the game at 56-56 with 4:15 on the clock.
Howard would retake the lead at 60-58 after two free throws by Sarah Edmond before the Spiders would make their late run.
The Bison had their best quarter in the third outscoring Richmond 24-18. Edmond finished with 13 of her 19 points in the quarter and was 4-for-5 from the field. Howard's Krislyn Marsh made a layup at the buzzer to give her team a 47-42 lead entering the fourth quarter.
The Spiders started fast against Howard making their first two three-pointers to go ahead 6-2 in the first quarter. Fee and freshman Aniyah Carpenter (Baltimore, Md.) knocked down triples to start the game.
Richmond took a 10-5 lead after back-to-back jumpers from fee with 2:20 remaining in the quarter. Howard answered with a 5-0 run after two free throws by Sarah Edmond tied the game at 10-10 with a minute left in the first quarter.
The Spiders scored the final three points, including a layup by Carpenter to lead 13-10 after one.
In the second quarter, Ervin made a layup to increase Richmond's lead to 15-10. The Bison went on another 5-0 run to tie the game at 15-15 off a layup by Asia McCants with 5:11 on the clock. Howard opened up a four-point lead at 19-15 after McCants hit a jumper with 3:16 left in the second quarter.
Fee would take over hitting three triples ending the second quarter with a season-high 16 points off 4-for-7 shooting from downtown. Fee nailed a three-pointer with 24 seconds left to give the Spiders a one-point lead after two quarters.
Richmond has 11 days to prepare for a road contest against Quinnipiac on Dec. 19 at 5:30 in Hamden, Connecticut.
