Spider Basketball Surging Towards Attendance Milestone
02/12/2018 | Men's Basketball
Just two years after achieving the highest average attendance at the Robins Center in nearly a quarter-century, Richmond men's basketball is on the cusp of surpassing that milestone this season.
In 2015-16, the Spiders averaged 6,435 fans per game, the most since an average of 7,214 fans attended each game at the Robins Center during the 1992-93 season, when the arena held nearly 2,000 more fans than it does today.Â
Three home games remain this season, and the Spiders currently are averaging 6,447 fans per game in the 7,201-seat capacity Robins Center. Saturday home games against Saint Louis (February 17th) and Saint Joseph's (February 24th) are trending toward near capacity crowds, and favorable attendance is expected for the Wednesday night matchup with UMass on February 28th.
The increase in attendance started before the season began, as Spider fans accounted for more than 3,300 season tickets, which set the record for the most in any season since the university started archiving data on annual season ticket sales. Spider fans have continued to purchase tickets at a torrid pace as the season has progressed, with four sell-outs and near-capacity attendance at several other games.
Currently, Richmond has the third-highest attendance in the A-10 behind only Dayton and VCU. Last season, the Spiders finished third nationally among schools with a total enrollment under 5,000 students, trailing only Providence and Butler.
"We are proud of the support that Spider fans have shown this season. Fans know that when they come to the Robins Center, they are going to enjoy a great fan experience," said Scott Warner, Assistant AD/ Marketing and Fan Development.
