Spiders Drop Midweek Contest at ODU, 4-2
02/20/2018 | Baseball
NORFOLK, Va. -- The Spider Baseball team dropped its midweek contest at in-state foe, Old Dominion, 4-2, Tuesday afternoon.Â
Richmond struck first thanks to an RBI single from Daniel Brumbaugh to bring in D.J. Lee, which gave the Spiders a 1-0 advantage in the third. The Monarchs answered with a pair of runs in the fourth to take a one-run lead, 2-1.Â
It remained a one-run game as both teams looked for opportunities, but pitching and defense would halt any such chance. ODU broke through in the bottom of the eighth to tack on two runs and extend their lead to 4-1.Â
The Spiders weren't going to go quietly as Tim Miller led off the ninth with a double to left center. Back-to-back singles from Sage Bruhl and Tyler Plantier allowed Miller to cross the plate and cut the Monarchs' lead to two. However, the late rally came up just short, as ODU came away with the midweek victory, 4-2.Â
Â
Richmond is set to open its 2018 home slate on Friday, February 23 as they welcome Towson and former Spider assistant coach Matt Tyner to Pitt Field for a three-game set. Friday's game is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. and will be available on the A-10 Network.Â
