Late Surge Leads Spiders Past Towson, 7-3, Saturday

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – It was a come-from-behind victory for the Spider Baseball team on Saturday afternoon. Richmond (4-2) overcame a three-run deficit and scored seven runs in the final three frames for a 7-3 win over Towson.
It was all Towson (1-4) early as Richie Palacios sent the ball over the wall in left center to put the Tigers ahead, 1-0 in the fourth. Back-to-back doubles sparked the Tiger offense as they added two more runs in the fifth to go ahead, 3-0.
With the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth, the late inning magic happened. Brandon Johnson blasted a two-run double to cut Towson's lead to one, 3-2. Vinny Capra laid down a bunt single to get things started in the seventh. Capra crossed the plate and evened the score when Tim Miller singled through the left side. Jordan Schulefand drew a bases loaded walk. which allowed Daniel Brumbaugh to cross the plate. The inning was capped off as Sage Bruhl hit into a double play and Miller came home to give Richmond a two-run lead, 5-3.
Behind singles from Miller and Brumbaugh the Spiders tacked on two runs in the eighth to secure their 7-3 win.
James Hulbert earned his first career win on the hill. The left hander logged just over two innings of scoreless work before giving way to Dalton Light. Light also registered two scoreless innings, notched a career-high three strikeouts, and picked up his first career save.
Richmond returns to action tomorrow to finish the series with Towson. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. and will be available on the Atlantic 10 Network.
