Spiders Take Down Maryland, 10-3, In Midweek Action

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – Behind a six run sixth inning, the Spider Baseball team shut down Big Ten foe, Maryland, 10-3.
Richmond grabbed a 2-0 lead thanks to a two-run shot from D.J. Lee in the bottom of the first. The Terrapin answered with a towering homer from Kevin Biondic to start the second.
Behind a solo homer from Maryland's Zach Jancarski in the fourth, the Terrapins evened the score at 2-2.The Spiders regained their lead off a Sage Bruhl single up the middle in the fifth. Maryland threatened looking to tie the score off a two-out double, but a play at the plate preserved the UR lead.
A hot offensive outburst in the sixth powered the Spiders to a 9-2 lead over the Terrapins. Richmond registered five hits in the inning to plate six runs.
Both teams exchanged home runs in the seventh with Maryland's Justin Vought and the Spiders' Tyler Plantier hitting his first long ball of the season. The Terps looked for chances, but the Richmond defense shut down any opportunity.
As a team, the Spider pitchers combined for 13 strikeouts and only allowed four hits. Lowell Schipper matched his career-high in strikeouts (5) while Foster Roy, who earned his second career win, notched a new career high of three.
The Spiders will return to Atlantic 10 play this weekend as they travel to George Mason. The series begins on Friday (March 30) at 3PM.
