UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's lacrosse team had its hands full on Thursday night against crosstown rival VCU, but junior Katie Sciandra would have none of it.

The junior scored a program-record nine goals, leading the Spiders to a 21-11 win at Robins Stadium. Her nine tallies are the most since Mary Flowers scored eight against American in 2011. She finished the game 7-for-7 from free position.

"Katie was clearly incredible tonight," head coach Allison Kwolek said after the win. "It's no surprise to us because that's what we see from her every day, but to see her score nine goals in one game was just fun to watch. There have been so many great players to come though this program over the years, but no one has ever scored nine goals in a game until Katie did tonight."

Senior Caroline Queally also posted a program first in the game, winning 10 draw controls to become the first Spider in program history to win 300 draws.

"Three hundred draw controls is an incredible milestone," Kwolek said of Queally. "Caroline has put a lot of extra work into that skill. Her ability on the draw makes a huge difference for us and is a tremendous advantage to our team."

Sciandra opened the scoring just under three minutes in, but VCU rebounded with a goal of its own less than a minute later. Sciandra and Julia Schmuckler each scored again, both from the free position mark, but VCU's Molly Barcikowski scored twice in a row to tie things at 3-3.

The Spiders quickly turned things around and saw Sciandra, Kim Egizi, Marissa Brown and Aly Fries score four-straight goals in a two-minute period to extend the lead to four.

The Rams scored once again, but Richmond would go on to score three of the final goals of the half, including the frist goal of the season from Madison Ostrick, to take a 10-5 lead into the break.

VCU came out strong in the second half, cutting the lead to two on three separate occasions, but Sciandra broke things open with three-straight tallies to spark a six-goal scoring outburst by the Spiders.

The Rams would go on to score once more, but Egizi scored twice and Sophia Madsen logged her first career goal to make the final score 21-11.

The Spiders will now hit the road and travel to face A-10 foe Duquesne on Saturday, March 31. Game time in Pittsburgh is set for 12pm.
