04/14/2018 | Baseball
ARLINGTON, Va. – The Spiders picked up their second Atlantic 10 series win this weekend after splitting the Saturday doubleheader with George Washington. The Colonials got the win in game one, but Robbie Baker tossed a complete game to send the Spiders past GW in the series finale.
Game 1 – George Washington 6, Richmond 0
GW (20-15, 6-3) grabbed a 1-0 lead with the help of a sac fly in the first inning. The Colonials added to their lead with a pair of runs in the third. The Spiders threatened in the fourth as they loaded the bases thanks to singles from Tyler Plantier and Vinny Capra, but a flyout ended the inning.
The Colonials tacked on a run in the fifth and one in the sixth to go up 5-0.
Kyle Schmidt ripped a double to start off the seventh, but GW shut down the Spider offense preventing them to drive in the runner. Behind a double from GW's Isiah Pasteur the Colonials added one more to their lead, 6-0.
Game 2 – Richmond 5, George Washington 4
The Spiders (19-15, 5-4) got things started in the second game as Plantier blasted his third homer of the season to put Richmond on the board, 1-0. Jordan Schulefand and Sage Bruhl logged back-to-back singles in the third and thanks to a Capra sac fly, Richmond added a run to the board, 2-0.
Capra ripped a two-run homer in the fifth to add to the Spiders' lead 4-0. GW threatened in the home half of the inning as they loaded the bases and cut Richmond's lead to two, 4-2.
Richmond responded in the next frame when Daniel Brumbaugh ripped a single to right driving in Plantier bringing the Spider lead to three, 5-2. The Colonials weren't going to go quietly as they tacked on a pair of runs in the seventh to make it a one-run ball game, 5-4.
Baker pitched his first career complete game. En route to the win, the right-hander scattered seven hits and struck out a season-high eight.
