04/18/2018 | Baseball
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – It was an in-state showdown at Pitt Field on Wednesday afternoon as Richmond and VMI battled it out on the diamond. The Spiders fell to VMI, 11-2, in a game decided by extra innings.
The Keydets threatened with runners in scoring position in the second, but Collin Lowe pitched out of the jam with back-to-back strikeouts. Richmond got on the board first with a 1-0 lead after D.J. Lee smashed his third home run of the season. An RBI single from Justin Cook drove in Kyle Schmidt and gave the Spiders a 2-0 advantage.
With a two-run shot over the center field wall in the top of the fourth VMI evened the score at 2-2.
Lowe logged a career long out going five innings against the Keydets. The right-hander also matched a career-best five strikeouts.
As the game remained locked in a 2-2 tie the midweek contest between the in-state rivals would be decided in extra innings. Nine runs in the tenth led the Keydets to a 11-2 victory. The Spiders looked for opportunities in the home half, but VMI fought off anything they tried.
Richmond is set to return to conference play on Friday (April 20) as they entertain reigning Atlantic 10 champion, Davidson for a three-game series.
