CARY, N.C. – The University of Richmond men's golf team spent its weekend at MacGregor Downs Country Club in North Carolina, competing against some of the nation's top competition in the Stitch Intercollegiate and put forth some strong individual showings to come away with an 11th place finish.
The Par 72 championship course played 6,973 yards this weekend and presented unique challenges to the Spiders who handled it well. Highlighting the effort, as has become the norm, was Matthew Lowe who posted a +6, 222 with rounds of 75-72-75 to finish in a tie for 44th in the stacked field.
Freshman Andrew McInerney appeared in just the third event of his young career and showed he capable of playing at the top level. With rounds of 73-77-78 he posted a career-low score of +12, 228 to finish in a tie for 59th overall. His +1, 73 in the opening round was the best among his Spider teammates and was the lowest score to par he has posted so far this year.
Andrew Sciarretta finished second among the group with a  +11, 227. He shook off an 80 in round one and bounced back with scores of 75 and an Even par, 72 to close things out strong. His 72 was the best of the group during the third and final round. For his efforts, the sophomore finished in a tie for 57th.
Â
Joining McInerney in a tie for 59th was Ben Wanichek who maintained his breakout campaign with steady scores of 77-78-73. Playing out of the No. 2 spot, the junior posted a pair of birdies on the front nine of the final round to offset a trio of bogeys to finish just one stroke over par. His current stroke average of 74.96 easily tops his career average by near a full stroke.
Rounding out the group was Zack Justice who rolled out scores of 79-78-76, 233 to finish in a tie for 65th overall. Up next for the Spiders will be a trip back to Justice's hometown of Orlando to defend their Atlantic 10 Championship crown at Grand Cypress April 27-29.
