04/20/2018 | Baseball
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – It was an Atlantic 10 showdown at Pitt Field on Friday afternoon. Despite outhitting the 'Cats, Richmond fell in the first game of the series, 6-2.
Kyle Adams got things started for the Spiders with a double to the right field corner to bring in Kyle Schmidt. Richmond capped off the second inning with an RBI single from Justin Cook for a 2-0 advantage.
Davidson scored four runs on four hits in the fifth to take a two-run lead, 4-2. The Spiders threatened in the bottom of the sixth as they loaded the bases on three singles in the inning; however, the runners were left stranded as the 'Cats maintained their lead. The 'Cats scratched across a run in the seventh to go ahead, 5-2. Davidson looked to add to their lead in the eighth, but a stellar play at the plate kept the Spiders within striking distance.
Adams and Cook hit back-to-back singles in the bottom of the eighth looking to spark a Spider rally. Both moved up a base on a wild pitch, but they were unable to chip away at Davidson's lead. Davidson added to their lead on a solo homer in the ninth, to go ahead, 6-2. The Spiders looked for opportunities but were unable to overcome the deficit.
The series is set to resume tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. The Spiders will also participate in their annual Lace Up 4 Pediatric Cancer game tomorrow to benefit Go4theGoal. A special pregame ceremony will take place at 12:30 p.m.
