Red Closes Spring With 14-13 Win Over White At Spring Game

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond football held its annual Spring Game Saturday and the Red team picked up a 14-13 victory over the White team in an abbreviated scrimmage on a perfect sunny day at Robins Stadium. The teams played four, 12-minute quarters with the second half having a running clock.

Redshirt junior quarterback Kevin Johnson was named the game's Offensive Most Valuable Player after leading the Red team to victory. Johnson connected on 12-of-21 passing for 162 yards and two touchdowns, including a game-long 40-yard pass to wide receiver Cortrelle Simpson in the second quarter.

Redshirt freshman defensive back Gus Lee took home Defensive Most Valuable Player honors. Lee recorded a game-high seven tackles, including one for loss, while also notching an interception for the Red team.

Junior defensive lineman Maurice Jackson was named the Winter Warrior Award winner. The Winter Warrior Award goes to the member of the team who has made the biggest strides during offseason workouts and practice, through a demonstrated commitment in strength and conditioning, practice habits and overall attention to improving their craft. The award is voted on by the coaching staff and Head Strength and Conditioning Coach Scott Brincks

Red opened the scoring early in the second quarter when Johnson found running back Gordon Collins from 8-yards out for the first of his two touchdown passes. White tied the game with 1:12 remaining in the first half as redshirt sophomore quarterback Joe Mancuso connected with sophomore wide receiver Jordan Cannady from 34-yards out knotting the game at 7-7.

Johnson would send the Red team into halftime with the lead though as he again showed the Spiders' quick-strike capability. He connected on a 36-yard touchdown pass with redshirt junior wide receiver Dejon Brissett down the sideline for the 14-7 lead.

The White team found the end zone in the third quarter when redshirt sophomore quarterback Reid Chenault connected with tight end Ben Maffe from 19-yards out. The White team went for the two-point conversion to take the lead but the Red defense stepped up with the stop to preserve the lead.

The Red team consisted of the first team offense and the second team defense while the White team had the first team defense and the second team offense. The Spider coaching staff split between the two teams with offensive coordinator Jeff Durden leading the Red team and defensive coordinator Adam Braithwaite leading the White team.
