Men's Lacrosse Continues to Roll with, 9-8, Win at Mercer
04/21/2018 | Men's Lacrosse
MACON, Ga. - The University of Richmond men's lacrosse team (8-5, 5-1 SoCon) continued its hot play in the Southern Conference, knocking off Mercer (4-9, 2-4) on the road, 9-8. The Spiders held off a late charge by home standing Bears to secure their fifth conference victory and more or less secure a position in the conference tournament two weeks from now.Â
Ryan Lanchbury stood out once again with a second hat trick in as many games to go with an assist for his four points but not to be outdone was Teddy Hatfield who registered a pair of goals and five assists to pace the offense. Ryan Lee, Mitch Savoca, Mitch Goldberg, and Austin Brown all added goals of their own to contribute to the effort.Â
The first quarter was relatively low-key by lacrosse standards. Mercer got the scoring started with 13:09 to go in the first and held that lead until the waning moments of the quarter when Lanchbury let fly a spectacular score with just two seconds to play. The second quarter brought plenty of fireworks to make up for the first.Â
Savoca got the scoring started, Mercer answered then it was Richmond that went on a run, scoring three-straight to jump out to a 5-2 lead. Lee and Lanchbury answered a Mercer goal with scores of their own to leave the Spiders with a 7-4 advantage heading into the locker room.
Goldberg scored with 12:21 to play in the third and Lanchbury notched his third at the 3:59 mark to close the scoring for the Spiders in this one. From then on it was up to the defense to secure this victory and they did just that. They bent but they did not break as they were able to come up with the necessary stops down the stretch to close this one out.Â
The Spiders will conclude the 2018 regular season on Saturday (April 28) at Robins Stadium opposite Air Force. Prior to the game the seniors will be honored with a special ceremony.
