Spiders Dominate in 16-7 Win at Saint Joseph's

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The University of Richmond women's lacrosse team scored nine goals in the first half and held Saint Joseph's to seven goals on its way to a 16-7 A-10 road win on Friday night.

Katie Sciandra led the Spiders with six goals and an assist, while rookie Rachel Ziemba scored twice and added a pair of assists in her college debut to lead the offense. Megan Gianforte finished the game with nine saves, and Julie Ball collected a career-high seven ground balls and won a career-high seven draw controls.

The Spiders started the scoring with two straight goals from Julia Schmuckler and Sciandra before Saint Joseph's cut the lead in half with 26:04 to play in the half. Sciandra's second goal of the game and Marissa Brown's first would extend the lead to three, But the Hawks bounced back again with two goals of their own to make it 4-3.

Richmond would then go on a four-goal run to end the half, sparked by a tally from Aly Fries off of an assist from Kim Egizi. Ziemba scored her first career goal to double up the Hawks, before Sciandra scored twice more to send the Spiders into the break with a 9-3 lead.

Saint Joseph's opened the second half with a goal in the opening minute before Sciandra equaled it with her sixth goal of the day. Madison Ostrick stepped up for the Spiders, scoring two goals in a row on assists from Fries and Egizi, but the Hawks responded with three goals of their own to narrow the lead to 12-7 with 12:30 to play.

The Spiders would bounce back with goals from Fries and Katie Trainer, both assisted by Ziemba, to take a 14-7 lead. Ziemba would then score to extend the lead in the closing minutes before Egizi tallied her lone goal of the day to round out the scoring.

The Spiders return to action on Sunday, April 8, when they head back to Robins Stadium for their annual Friends of Jaclyn game against George Washington. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
