Seniors Lead Spiders to 8-6 Victory over La Salle

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – It was quite the send-off on Senior Day at Pitt Field Saturday afternoon. The seniors led the Spiders to an 8-6 victory over La Salle to win its fifth Atlantic 10 series of the 2018 season.
Brandon Johnson got the scoring started for the Spiders as he delivered an RBI single to left to drive in Justin Cook and give Richmond a 1-0 advantage.
With back-to-back home runs from Vinny Capra and Kyle Adams in the home half of the third, the Spiders extended their lead, 4-0, sending La Salle to its bullpen. The Spiders tacked on a pair of runs in the fourth on an Adams' sac fly and a RBI single from Cook to make it a 6-0 ball game.
La Salle avoided the shutout with a couple of runs in the fifth, cutting into Richmond's lead. The Explorers continued to chip away at the Spiders' lead with a solo shot to bring them within three, 6-3.
Tyler Plantier added to the Spiders' lead with a two-out solo homer in the sixth to make it 7-3. The Explorers weren't going to go without a fight as they scored three runs in the seventh to make it a one-run ball game, 7-6.
The Explorers threatened in the top of the eighth, but a punch out from Layne Looney ended the inning. Richmond added an insurance run in the bottom half as Kyle Schmidt came up with a clutch hit as a pinch hitter to bring in D.J. Lee and give Richmond and 8-6 lead. In the top of the ninth, Looney shut down the Explorers in order to pick up his seventh save of the season. WIth the save, Looney moves into fifth place in single season saves.
The Spiders will close out the 2018 home slate tomorrow with the first pitch scheduled for 10:00 a.m.
