Spiders Take Down Virginia in 11-3 Victory Tuesday Night
05/15/2018 | Baseball
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. –The Spider Baseball team surged to an 11-3 victory over in-state rival, Virginia on Tuesday night. This was the first time in 15 years Richmond defeated the Cavaliers - the last time the Spiders won was in 2003.
The Spiders (29-21) didn't waste any time getting things started as they loaded the bases in the first inning and grabbed a 2-0 advantage on an RBI single from Sage Bruhl, sending Virginia to its bullpen.
Vinny Capra, who led the team with four hits, smacked his fifth home run of the season putting the Spiders in control of the scoreboard, 4-0 in the second. Justin Cook delivered a single through the right side to bring home Kyle Adams extending Richmond's lead to 5-0. In the fifth, Tyler Plantier blasted a towering two-run homer over the left field wall putting the Spiders ahead, 7-0.
The Cavaliers (27-22) broke up Brendan McGuigan's no-no in the bottom of the fifth. McGuigan registered his longest outing of the season with five innings of work. The right-hander gave up just one hit, struck out three and only walked one.
Richmond loaded the bases again in the sixth and added a run on a wild pitch and a Bruhl single to make it a 9-0 game. In the seventh, the Spiders added two more runs sparked by Capra's double down the left field line to score Daniel Brumbaugh adding to the Spiders' lead.
Virginia threatened in the seventh and avoided the shutout with a couple runs in the seventh, cutting into Richmond's lead, 11-2. The Cavaliers tacked on a run in the bottom of the ninth, but it wouldn't be enough to touch Richmond's eight-run lead.
The Spiders close out the 2018 regular season with a critical series at Fordham. With an uncertain forecast in the New York area this week, the schedule has been altered with a doubleheader scheduled for Thursday beginning at 12:00 p.m. Game three is set for a 12:00 p.m. start on Friday, weather permitting.
