Spiders Split Doubleheader at Fordham on Thursday
05/17/2018 | Baseball
BRONX, N.Y. – The Spiders split the Thursday doubleheader at Fordham picking up a 1-0 extra inning victory in the second game after Tim Miller's masterful performance on the hill.
Game 1: Fordham 11, Richmond 0
Fordham jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a single and a Spider miscue. The Rams tacked on three in the bottom of the third and two in the fourth to go ahead, 7-0.
In the sixth inning, Fordham looked for an opportunity to add to their lead, but Sage Bruhl robbed Justin Bardwell of an extra-base hit, halting any chance. Three consecutive doubles allowed Fordham to score four runs and take an 11-0 lead in the eighth, a lead that the Rams wouldn't relinquish.
Game 2: Richmond 1, Fordham 0 (10 innings)
Game two of the Thursday twinbill was quite the pitcher's duel. Tim Miller was masterful on the hill as he threw nine one-hit scoreless innings with five struck outs.
The Spiders threatened in the second putting runners on the corners after Tyler Plantier drew a walk and D.J. Lee singled to right, however, the scoring opportunity was stifled by the Rams.
Miller was holding the Rams hitless through four innings before Brian Goulard broke up the no-no. Daniel Brumbaugh singled through the first baseman's legs in the sixth to put runners on the corners, but a double play ended the threat keeping the score locked at 0-0.
Bruhl led off the eighth with a single to center and moved to third after a sac bunt and a fly out. The Spiders kept the threat alive as Kyle Schmidt drew a two-out walk to put runners on the corners, but once again the runners were left stranded. Miller continued to be stellar on the mound as he struck out the side in the bottom of the eighth. Daniel Brumbaugh delivered a two-out single to right in the tenth to drive in Vinny Capra and put the Spiders on the board, 1-0. The Rams looked to strike back in the bottom half of the inning as they had a runner on third, but Layne Looney and the Spider defense ended the threat and secured the win.
The Spiders will conclude the series with Fordham and the regular season tomorrow at 12:00 p.m.
