NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – After standout performances during the 2017-18 season, University of Richmond women's tennis freshman Emily Dunbar and sophomore Kiana Marshall have earned recognition from the Atlantic 10 head coaches.
Â
In just her rookie season, Dunbar was named the Co-Most Outstanding Performer, as well as the Most Outstanding Rookie Performer, while she and Marshall both earned First Team All-Atlantic 10 honors. Dunbar shares Most Outstanding Performer accolades with George Washington's Maria Siopacha.
Â
Dunbar becomes the first Spider to earn either Performer or Rookie of the Year honors since 2012, when Joanna Matuszczyk and Melissa Kandinata won the awards, respectively. She is the first A-10 women's tennis player to sweep Performer and Rookie honors since 2002.
Â
A native of Medina, Ohio, Dunbar had one of the best rookie seasons in program history, going 11-8 at No. 1 singles in spring play, including a 9-1 run to round out the season and logging wins against opponents from VCU (twice), Rhode Island, UMass and Saint Joseph's. She opened play as a Spider in the fall with a Flight A singles title at the Cissie Leary Invitational, winning five-straight matches to begin her career.
Marshall continued to play well in her sophomore campaign after earning Second Team All-Conference honors in 2017. A native of Bridgetown, Barbados, she went 9-6 in singles action, starting at No. 4 and moving to No. 2 at the end of the season, while logging an 11-match unbeaten streak. In the fall, she went 5-3 in singles play.
Â
The duo of Dunbar and Marshall paired at No. 1 doubles to end the year, wrapping up the season with a 7-2 record as a pair.
Â
This marks the first time since 2012 that multiple Spiders have been named to the All-Conference First Team.
