05/18/2018 | Baseball
BRONX, N.Y. –The Spiders closed out the 2018 regular season with a 8-2 victory over Fordham. Richmond scored in six consecutive innings to defeat the Rams in the rubber match to win its sixth Atlantic 10 series of the season.
The Spiders loaded the bases in the first, but would be unable to push across any runners. Richmond capitalized with runners in scoring position thanks to a single up the middle from D.J. Lee., putting Richmond ahead 1-0.
Lee struck again with a sac fly to drive in Tyler Plantier and give Richmond a 2-0 advantage. The Rams cut into Richmond's lead in the fourth and looked to even the score, but a play at the plate maintained the Spiders' lead.
Richmond continued to look for opportunities to add to their lead and in the fifth they threatened again, sending Fordham to their bullpen. Kyle Adams crossed the plate in the inning to extend their lead 3-1. In the sixth, Sage Bruhl scored after Adams drew a walk to make it a 4-1 lead.
Behind a Tyler Plantier double down the left field line, Richmond tacked on a run in the seventh for a 5-1 advantage. Back-to-back singles in the eighth from Brandon Johnson and Cook added to the Spiders' lead, 7-1. The Rams cut Richmond's lead to five, 7-2, when they scratched across a run in the eighth. After loading the bases in the ninth, Richmond added one more run to the board to go ahead, 8-2. Dalton Light came in the bottom of the ninth and shut down the Rams in order to maintain the Spider lead.
The Atlantic 10 Tournament field - seedings and pairings - will be revealed at the conclusion of games tomorrow (Saturday).
