UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – Following the highly successful 2018 season, Spider alums Vinny Capra and Robbie Baker have continued their baseball careers at the professional level, earning spots in the Toronto Blue Jays and Boston Red Sox organizations.
Capra, a Second Team All-Atlantic 10 selection, was selected in the 20th round by the Toronto Blue Jays during June Major League Baseball Draft. Capra is currently playing for north of the border with the Vancouver Canadians in the Class A Short Season Northwest League. The shortstop is currently hitting at a .253 average with nine extra base hits. In his last 10 games, Capra is hitting at a .333 average with a four-game hit streak. He's driven in 13 runs, scored 10 times and recorded seven stolen bases.
Baker was a First Team All-Atlantic 10 honoree after leading the Spiders pitching staff in starts, innings pitched, complete games, shutouts and strikeouts in 2018. As a professional player, Baker has made four appearances for the GCL Red Sox, logging at least one inning in each appearance. His first appearance came on July 4th, going 1.2 innings with two strikeouts. In 4.2 innings, he's struck out seven hitters without allowing an earned run to keep a perfect 0.00 ERA. Opponents are hitting just .176 against the right-hander, as he's scattered three hits this summer.
