Football Battles Rival No. 2 James Madison Saturday To Robins Stadium

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond football team open the home portion of Colonial Athletic Association play this weekend when the Spiders host No. 2 James Madison. Game time is set for 3 p.m. at Robins Stadium and the game will be broadcast online through College Sports Live/CBS Digital as the CAA Game of the Week, with links available at www.RichmondSpiders.com.
Additionally, the game will be broadcast on television on NBC Sports Washington+ and has been picked up by NBC Sports Philadelphia+, NBC Sports Chicago+ and SNY. On the call for NBC Sports Washington+ will be Bob Black, Chris Anderson and Sean Robertson.
The game will also air on ESPN Richmond on 99.5 FM and 950 AM with Robert Fish and Matt Smith on the call. The audio will also stream on www.RichmondSpiders.com and one the TuneIn App. Full game notes are available in the links to the right and are brought to you by Owen & Owens.
Saturday's game marks the 36th meeting all-time between James Madison and Richmond. The Spiders lead the all-time series by a slim 18-17 margin since the series began in 1981. The evenly matched series has seen Richmond go 8-9 all-time against the Dukes in Richmond while going 9-8 all-time in Harrisonburg (one neutral game). James Madison has won the last two meetings and has won five out of the last seven meetings against the Spiders. Last year, Richmond dropped a 20-13 battle in Harrisonburg and last time at Robins Stadium (2016), the Spiders suffered a 47-43 loss to the Dukes. Richmond's last win over James Madison came in 2015 with a 59-49 win in Harrisonburg.
Senior wide receiver Tyler Wilkins (Richmond, Va.) has caught 19 passes for 288 yards in his career against James Madison. Wilkins did most of his damage last season, catching a career-high 12 passes for 180 yards in Harrisonburg, including a touchdown. Senior running back Deontez Thompson (Indian Head, Md.) had a strong game against the Dukes in 2016 in Richmond, gaining 146 yards on 16 touches, including a touchdown. Senior defensive lineman Andrew Clyde (Dallas, Texas) has recorded 12 tackles in his three games against James Madison.

The Spiders have had success against the second-ranked team, posting a 4-1 record all-time when facing the No. 2 team. In fact, the Spiders have out-scored the second ranked team 152-112 in the five contests. Richmond defeated No. 2 Illinois State 39-27 in 2015 in the FCS Playoffs before falling 33-7 at North Dakota State in the national semifinals. The Spiders played James Madison in 2012 when the Dukes were ranked No. 2 and posted a 35-29 victory in Richmond. The Spiders also picked up wins over Appalachian State in 2008 (33-13) and Hampton in 2005 (38-10).
The 2018 season marks the 12th season for Richmond in the Colonial Athletic Association. The Spiders are 54-35 all-time in CAA play dating back to their inaugural season in 2007. Richmond is 5-6 all-time in CAA home openers but have won two out of its last three league home openers. Last season, the Spiders dropped a last minute contest to Elon in their home opener. In 2016, Richmond opened the home league schedule with a win over Towson while in 2015 the Spiders downed Maine.

The Spiders are 27-32 all-time against ranked opponents at home.
