UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – A late scoring run and a couple of banked-in jumpers allowed Duquesne to rally past the Richmond Spiders Wednesday night as the Dukes escaped the Robins Center with a 74-68 win.
Richmond led for most of the game's first 35 minutes before Duquesne closed the game on a 17-7 run, hitting all five of their field goals and all four of their free-throw attempts in the game's final five minutes.
After both teams were held scoreless over the game's first two minutes, the Dukes took a narrow 4-2 lead into the first media timeout, as neither team was able to capitalize on their chances.
But Gilyard and Cayo teamed up to spark the Spiders as the half came to a close, scoring 19 of the Spiders' final 23 points to send Richmond into the locker room with a 32-28 halftime lead.
GIlyard and Cayo continued to produce to start of the second half, scoring 11 of the team's opening 13 points of the half.
The Dukes would not go away, taking a 48-47 lead on three-straight 3-pointers with 11:25 to play in the game and forcing a Spider timeout. The visitors couldn't hold the lead though, with the Spiders and Dukes exchanging one-point leads seven times in a little over two minutes from the 11-minute mark to the nine-minute mark.
After Richmond built a 61-57 lead with five minutes remaining, the Dukes used a pair of three-pointers by Frankie Hughes to take a 65-63 lead with just over two minutes to go.
When Nathan Cayo tied with game on a jumper, Duquesne's Sincere Carry banked in a runner to put the Dukes up a pair. On their next possession, Hughes banked in a three-pointer to give the Dukes a five-point lead with a minute to play.
Cayo led all scorers with 23 points, tying his career high, while Gilyard finished with 22 for his sixth career 20-point performance. Grant Golden found his offensive touch late in the game, scoring 10 of his 14 points in the second half to go with a team-high eight rebounds.
The Spiders will now head back on the road, traveling to face A-10 foe Davidson on Saturday. Tip-off is set for 12:30 p.m. and the game will be broadcast nationally on the NBC Sports Network.
