Duggan’s Free Throws Lift Spiders Over Saint Joseph’s, 46-45

RICHMOND, Va. – Junior Amy Duggan (Norwood, Mass.) calmly hit two free throws with 16 seconds remaining to give the University of Richmond women's basketball team a thrilling 46-45 win against Saint Joseph's Wednesday at the Robins Center.
Junior Jaide Hinds-Clarke (Westwood, N.J.) secured her fourth double-double of the season with 10 points and 12 rebounds. Duggan added six points and grabbed eight rebounds. Freshman Aniyah Carpenter (Baltimore, Md.) finished with eight points. Graduate student Daijia Ruffin (Louisville, Ky.) had 10 points off the bench.
The Spiders improved to 4-15 overall and 1-5 in league play. SJU falls to 6-13 and is 2-4 in A-10 action. Richmond outrebounded Saint Joseph's 41-34, including 13 offensive rebounds.
The game featured a bunch of big runs and a lot of defensive stops. In the fourth quarter, the Spiders fell behind 43-35 with 8:40 left on the clock. Carpenter started and finished a 9-0 run to put Richmond ahead 44-43 with 2:08 remaining.
Saint Joseph's answered with a layup by Katie Mayock to go back in front 45-44 with 1:44 left. The Spiders forced a defensive stop with 25 seconds remaining. Carpenter drove the lane but Duggan grabbed the offensive rebound and was fouled. Duggan hit two free throws to give Richmond a 46-45 lead with 16 seconds left.
The Hawks had one-last chance but Alyssa Monaghan (14 points) couldn't get the layup to fall giving the Spiders a one-point win.
Richmond had built an 11-point lead at 31-20 in the third quarter off a layup by Hinds-Clarke. Saint Joseph's would make a huge run outscoring the Spiders 21-4 the rest of the quarter. SJU at one-point went on a 19-2 run and ended the third quarter with a 41-35 advantage.
Ruffin led the team with seven points off 3-for-6 shooting after two quarters. Richmond jumped out to an 18-11 lead against Saint Joseph's in the first quarter.
The Spiders ended the first quarter on a 6-0 run thanks to an offensive rebound and layup by Ruffin.
In the second quarter, Richmond kept their seven-point lead early on after a layup by freshman Emma Squires (Kingston, Mass.). It was a defensive second quarter as both teams scored nine points apiece. Hinds-Clarke had six points and eight rebounds at halftime.
Richmond finished the game shooting 32.8 percent (19-for-58) and hit 63.6 percent from the free throw line off 7-for-11.
The Spiders venture back out on the road to face La Salle on Saturday, Jan. 26, at 2 p.m. in Philadelphia.
