Hot Shooting Leads Spiders Past La Salle, 74-60

Richmond Wins Second-Straight A-10 Game & Snaps Road Losing Streak
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The University of Richmond women's basketball team scored a season-high 74 points and shot a season-high 47.5 percent from the field in a 74-60 win on the road at La Salle Saturday at Tom Gola Arena.
Graduate student Daijia Ruffin (Louisville, Ky.) had a career-high 20 points off the bench going 8-for-16 from the field and had five steals. Junior Jaide Hinds-Clarke (Westwood, N.J.) posted her fifth double-double of the season with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Sophomore Alex Parson (North Chesterfield, Va.) scored 14 points and dished out a career-high eight assists.
Richmond played their best game of the season with season highs in points (74), shooting percentage (47.5), assists (20) and 16 steals. The Spiders (5-15) have won two-straight Atlantic 10 games and hold a 2-5 record with nine conference games remaining.
The third quarter explosion proved to be the difference as Richmond outscored La Salle 24-10, including a 20-2 run to end the quarter. Ruffin finished with 12 points in the third quarter and was 5-for-7 from the field. The quarter ended with a buzzer beating three-pointer from freshman Aniyah Carpenter (Baltimore, Md.).
La Salle tried to get back into the game but Richmond answered every time. With 7:39 remaining in the game, junior Amy Duggan (Norwood, Mass.) hit a three-pointer to give the Spiders a 20-point lead at 67-47.
The Explorers cut the lead to 12 points at 70-58 with 2:32 on the clock but Ruffin scored on a layup to build the lead back to 72-58. Duggan would score the final points for Richmond off a steal and a layup with 1:08 remaining. Richmond would cruise to a 74-60 victory.
Richmond used hot shooting to jump out to a 37-35 lead after two quarters against La Salle. The Spiders outscored the Explorers 17-15 in the first quarter and were even 20-20 in the second quarter.
Parson couldn't miss scoring 12 points off 4-for-5 shooting and dished out three assists. Hinds-Clarke scored eight points and grabbed six rebounds. Freshman Emma Squires (Kingston, Mass.), playing in her second game since an injury, added five points off the bench.
The Spiders took a 6-3 lead early in the first quarter off two free throws from Ruffin with 7:47 left on the clock.
La Salle answered with a 5-0 run to go up 8-6 but Parson nailed a three-pointer just 17 seconds later to regain the lead at 9-8. The Explorers again took the lead at 14-11 before Richmond ended the quarter on a 6-1 run to lead 17-15.
In the second quarter, both teams continued to exchange baskets as Carpenter put Richmond ahead 23-19 with a jumper at the 6:48 mark.
La Salle tied the game again at 23-23 but Parson hit another jumper to lead 25-23 with 5:34 left in the second quarter. The Explorers kept battling taking the lead at 35-34 with 1:13 remaining in the quarter. Freshman Molly Mraz (Erie, Pa.) responded with a three-pointer with 47 seconds left to give Richmond a 37-35 lead.
Richmond forced 22 turnovers for La Salle and scored 24 points off those miscues.
The Spiders will have seven days to prepare for a home contest against UMass on Super Bowl Sunday, Feb. 3, at Noon at the Robins Center.
