Swimming and Diving Falls to James Madison on Senior Day

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond swimming and diving team celebrated its four seniors prior to the start of Saturday's dual meet against the James Madison Dukes at the Robins Center Natatorium. The Spiders recognized the accomplishments and contributions from its senior class of Nicole Piercy (Newport News, Va.), Brynn Robertson (Omaha, Neb.), Morgan Soulia (Wexford, Pa.) and Lauren Wallace (Charlotte, N.C.). The Spiders fell to the Dukes, 196.5-103.5 in the senior day event.
Richmond had 18 top three finishes in the 16-event meet, led by Hannah Gouger (Cockeysville, Md.) and Maggie Purcell (Southampton, N.Y.). Gouger won both the 200-yard backstroke (2:00.63) and the 100-yard backstroke (55.46), both season bests. Purcell added two season best times in the 200 individual medley and the 200-yard breaststroke. She recorded a 200 IM time of 2:05.13 and a 200-yard breaststroke time of 2:18.80.
The 400-yard freestyle relay team and the 200-yard medley relay teams each earned a second-place finish, but recorded season-best times in their respective races. The 400-freestyle team of Gouger, Eliza Manning (Frederick County, Md.), Wallace and Mallory Shake (Lexington, Ky.) turned in a a time of 3:30.76. The 200-yard medley relay team of Gouger, Purcell, Ellie Ronan (Marblehead, Mass.) and Manning finished with a time of 1:45.80. Purcell and Manning each added individual second place finishes. Purcell in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:05.99), and Manning in the 100-yard freestyle (51.77). Soulia added a second-place finish in the 200-individual medley, with a time of 2:05.52. Manning and Soulia each improved on the Spiders' season best times in those respective events.
Richmond had eight third-place finishes in Saturday's meet. Soulia placed third in the 100-yard butterfly (57.97) and the 200-yard freestyle (1:55.64). Piercy was third in the 500-yard freestyle (5:05.42), shaving five seconds off of her season-best time, and set another season best in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:31.80). Lexie Gilbert (Annapolis, Md.) earned a third-place finish in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:24.70). The 200-yard backstroke saw Ronan finish with a 2:07.67 time. Kristine Mihm (Wexford, Pa.) earned a third-place spot with a time of 53.25 in the 100-yard freestyle, with Manning finishing it out with a 23.92 time in the 50-yard freestyle. Manning's time in the 50-yard freestyle is .01 faster than Gouger's time set at the Patriot invite and is now the fastest time for the Spiders this season.
One diver finished in the top three of the two diving events. Sydney Weiskopf (Clifton Park, N.Y.) finished with a score of 277.20 in the 3-meter event.
The Spiders are back in action next weekend as they will take part in a two-day meet with the Navy Midshipmen in Annapolis beginning Friday, February 1st.
