Swimming and Diving Competes at Navy

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Richmond swimming and diving team returned to the pool Friday night as it traveled to Annapolis to take on the U.S. Naval Academy in one final dual meet prior to the Atlantic 10 Championships in Geneva, Ohio February 21-24. The Spiders fell to the Midshipmen, 135.5-93.5.
The Spiders had 14 top three finishes in the 16-event format. In the 500-yard freestyle, Nicole Piercy (Newport News, Va.) took home the top time (5:07.32), with Lauren Wallace (Charlotte, N.C.) taking second (507.53). Adding another first-place finish was the 200-yard freestyle relay team of Eliza Manning (Frederick County, Md.), Maggie Purcell (Southampton, N.Y.), Mallory Shake (Lexington, Ky.) and Hannah Gouger (Cockeysville, Md.), turning in a time of 1:35.87, the best time by a Spider foursome this season. Morgan Soulia (Wexford, Pa.), Wallace, Grace Palfreyman (Bridgewater, N.J.) and Kristine Mihm (Wexford, Pa.) finished second in the 200-yard relay with a time of 1:39.39.
Piercy and Gouger added a pair of second place finishes in the 1650-yard freestyle and the 200-yard backstroke, respectively. Piercy turned in a season-best time of 17:31.13, with Gouger adding a time of 2:03.75 for her second-place finish.
Richmond added five third place finishes, starting with the 400-medley relay team of Gouger, Purcell, Manning and Shake (3:53.93). Wallace added a third-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle (1:54.74), and Manning adding a 2:08.81 time in the 200-yard individual medley. Gouger finished tied for third with a Navy swimmer with an exact time of 24.41.
Sydney Weiskopf (Clifton Park, N.Y.), Maddy Chao (Niskayuna, N.Y.) and Alex Beran (Basking Ridge, N.J.) each finished in the top three of the one-meter dive. Weiskopf scored a 263.93, Chao at 253.35 and Beran at 234.08. Beran added a third-place finish in the three-meter dive event with a 282.75 score.
Richmond is back in the pool tomorrow, swimming in a joint practice session with the Midshipmen. There will be several timed events as well as a platform diving session.
