Big First Half Sends Spiders Past Billikens, 4-2

MARYLAND HEIGHTS, Mo. – The University of Richmond field hockey team used a dominant first half to take down Atlantic 10 foe Saint Louis on the road on Saturday, 4-2.

Freshmen Regan McCrossan and Lindsey Frank and sophomore Olivia Frazier each scored their first career goal in the win, which saw four different goal scorers for the Spiders. Richmond moves to 7-6 overall and 3-1 in A-10 play with the win.

McCrossan put the Spiders on the board late into the first quarter with her first career goal, but the team couldn't manage to score again in the opening 15 minutes despite a 5-0 shot advantage.

The Spiders carried momentum into the second quarter, scoring three more goals to break the game open. Frank tallied her first career goal off a corner play just over three minutes into the second quarter to double the lead, before Cadera Smith received a pass from Jessica Hendry with 6:05 to play and sent it past the Billiken goalkeeper for her first goal of 2019. Frazier rounded out the first half scoring for the Spiders, scoring her first career goal after collecting a loose ball and lifting it over the goalkeeper for a 4-0 halftime advantage.

Richmond outshot Saint Louis 17-0 in the opening 30 minutes and held an 8-0 penalty corner advantage.

Saint Louis looked to make a comeback in the third quarter, scoring the lone goal of the period on its first shot of the game. The Spiders outshot the Billikens 4-2 but couldn't manage a goal of their own, taking a 4-1 lead into the final 15 minutes.

The Billikens cut the Spider lead in half with another goal with nine minutes to play in the game, but the Spiders held off the home team's momentum to take the 4-2 win.
