RICHMOND, Va. – Spider swim and dive opens the 2019-20 season tomorrow as it will host the annual Richmond Duals at SwimRVA and the Robins Center Natatorium. The Spiders will welcome Atlantic 10 foes the Davidson Wildcats, the Duquesne Dukes and the George Mason Patriots to the annual Richmond Duals this weekend.
The Duals begin Friday evening when the Spiders will face Duquesne in the opening round, with Davidson and George Mason being on the opposite side of the four-team bracket. On the men's side, Davidson and George Mason will be competing a two-day dual meet competition against one another.
The Spiders enter the season after being picked fourth in the A-10's preseason poll. They are led by an NCAA qualifier and Olympic Trials qualifier in Hannah Gouger (Cockeysville, Md.). The senior was named the A-10's Most Outstanding Performer during the 2019 Conference meet, a meet in which the Spiders finished fourth. Joining Gouger in the senior class are swimmers Lexie Gilbert (Annapolis, Md.), Eliza Manning (Frederick County, Md.) and divers Maddy Chao (Niskayuna, N.Y.) and Sydney Weiskopf (Clifton Park, Md.).
Joining the Spiders in RVA this weekend is the 2019 A-10 Champion, Duquesne. The Dukes are led by the Most Outstanding Rookie Performer from the A-10 meet last season in Audrey Steen, and 2019's Coach of the Year. Duquesne will be competing in its fourth event of the season, but the first away from Pittsburgh.
Davidson women were picked to finish eighth in this season's preseason poll, with the men picked sixth. Last season at the Duals, Richmond and Davidson met on opening night, with the Spiders earning the win. For the two teams to meet again this season, each would need to win their opening round matchup. The Wildcats will also be competing in their third dual meet of the season, having taking on Queens University, UNC Asheville and Georgia Southern. Davidson has won the last two dual meets. The Davidson men are 1-1 on the year, falling in a dual meet to Queens University, and defeating VMI in Lexington last week.
George Mason will be swimming against Davidson on both the men's and women's side on the first night. Mason was picked sixth on the women's side and second on the men's side in the league's preseason poll. The Patriot women will be competing in their third event, following competitions at the Potomac Relays and a dual meet with the University of Delaware. On the men's side, George Mason took first of four teams at the Potomac Relays, as well as defeating Delaware in a dual meet.
Action will begin Friday night at 5 p.m. at SwimRVA, with the second round beginning Saturday at 10:15 a.m. The diving competition will be held at the Robins Center Natatorium begin at 4:30 Friday night, and 9:30 Saturday morning.
