UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond field hockey team answered each of the first two goals scored by No. 12 Saint Joseph's, but the Hawks scored with just over a minute remaining in the game to seal the 3-2 win on Sunday afternoon at Crenshaw Field.
A scoreless first quarter saw the Hawks outshoot the Spiders 3-1, and the visitors managed to get on the board in the 19th minute off a straight corner shot that found the bottom corner of the cage.
The Spiders answered just under seven minutes later, when freshman Evie Hanson collected a pass from fellow rookie Lindsey Frank and sent it past the Saint Joseph's goalkeeper to tie the game. The goal was Hanson's first of her career and came off of her first career shot.
Saint Joseph's capitalized on its third corner of the day just over a minute later when the initial shot was deflected into the cage and past Richmond goalie Frankie-Lynne Conklin, taking a 2-1 lead into halftime.
The Spiders' second goal of the day came in the 36th minute of play off of the team's first penalty stroke of the 2019 season, as a Saint Joseph's defender obstructed on an open shot at net to earn the call for the Spiders. Senior Amanda DaSilva stepped up to take the shot, sending it past the goalie to tie the game once again.
After a back-and-forth third quarter that saw Conklin log three saves and freshman defender Sutton Orndorff stop a shot for her first career defensive save, the Hawk attack stepped up in the fourth, outshooting the Spiders 10-2 in the final 15 minutes.
Conklin and the defensive unit held off Saint Joseph's for the first 13:55 of the quarter, as Conklin stopped six Hawk shots and senior defender Becky Carter logged a pair of defensive saves. It was a high shot from Saint Joseph's Tonya Botherway that found its way past Conklin with just 1:05 to play, giving the No. 12 team in the nation the win.
Saint Joseph's totaled 21 shots to the Spiders' seven while also holding an 8-2 edge in penalty corners. Conklin matched her career high with nine saves in the contest, while she and the defense combined for 12 saves against a Hawk offense that was averaging 4.62 goals per game entering today's contest.
The Spiders return to action on Friday, October 25, when they host Saint Francis on Senior Day. The final home contest of the regular season is set for 5 p.m. at Crenshaw Field.
