10/25/2019 | Field Hockey
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond field hockey team fought back from a 1-0 deficit to take down visiting Saint Francis (PA) on Friday afternoon at Crenshaw Field in a 2-1 Senior Day victory.
Â
Before the game, the Spiders honored the Class of 2020, recognizing seniors Amanda DaSilva, Hannah Loos, Jessica Loos, Abby Lyons, Ally Ludwig, Emma Nash and Elise Zwicklbauer, as well as redshirt junior Becky Carter.
Â
After a scoreless opening quarter, the Red Flash got on the board off their first corner attempt of the game, scoring off the initial shot to take a 1-0 lead in the 18th minute.
Â
The Spiders quickly rebounded, scoring off their own corner play just over six minutes later when sophomore Steffie Bongers collected the ball off a rebound and sent it past the Saint Francis goalkeeper to the game.
Â
The two teams went into the half in a 1-1 tie, but the Spiders took the lead just over midway through the third quarter when senior Abby Lyons' corner shot was deflected in by freshman Evie Hanson. The goal was Hanson's second in as many games.
Â
Despite being outshot 31-5 overall in the game, Saint Francis held off the aggressive Spider attack, holding the hosts scoreless through the remainder of play. Richmond dominated possession through the final three periods, taking nine shots to one in each of the frames. Richmond also held a 14-3 edge in penalty corners.
Â
The Spiders are still in the hunt for a spot in the 2019 Atlantic 10 Tournament with one A-10 Conference game remaining on the year. They will first travel to Durham, N.C., to take on No. 4 Duke in nonconference action this Sunday, October 27. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
