Spiders Fall On The Road At No. 4 Duke, 3-0

DURHAM, N.C. – The University of Richmond field hockey team outshot host and No. 4 Duke 11-8 in the second half, but the Blue Devils managed a goal in three of four quarters to take a 3-0 shutout win on Sunday afternoon in Durham.

Duke jumped out to an early lead, scoring off the first shot of the game for either team in the sixth minute of play. The Spider defense held off the hosts for the remainder of the half despite going down early, but the Blue Devils boasted an 8-2 shot advantage in the opening 30 minutes.

The Spiders opened the second half with a pair of penalty corners, doubling their shot output in the opening three minutes, but couldn't manage to tie the game. The Richmond offense put pressure on throughout the quarter, outshooting Duke 8-3 and taking six penalty corners to the Blue Devils' one.

Despite being outshot in the frame, the Blue Devils managed to double their lead with just 15 seconds remaining, scoring off a rebound from an initial shot. Duke then made it a 3-0 game early in the fourth quarter, as Hannah Miller scored her second goal of the day to seal the win.

Duke outshot the Spiders 16-13, but the Spiders held a 7-4 advantage in penalty corners. Frankie Lynne-Conklin finished the day with five saves.

The Spiders will return to action on Friday, November 1, when they travel to face Davidson to wrap up Atlantic 10 play. Game time against the Wildcats is set for 6 p.m.
