EAST HAMPTON, N.Y. -- The Richmond Spiders men's golf team registered its best tournament finish in more than two years on Tuesday, placing third at the Hamptons Intecollegiate. Playing at the famed Maidstone Club, Richmond recorded a 54-hole total of 923 (+59) and finished behind only Oregon State (890, +26) and Loyola-Maryland (922, +58) in the nine-team field.
Sophomore Michael Childress recorded his first career top-10 finish, tying for seventh with a score of 227 (+11), best among all Spiders. Senior Andrew Sciarretta tied for ninth at 229 (+13), the second-best result of his Spiders career. Four different Spiders have now recorded a top-20 finish in the first three events this season.Â
"We definitely have lots of guys that can compete on this team," said coach Adam Decker. "We are figuring things out and learning with each event. The ultimate goal is to get five guys all playing well at the same time."
Strong winds on Monday and Tuesday challenged the field of 54 golfers as players struggled to find opportunities for birdies. "It was really important to stick to a game plan, keep it simple, and stay patient," said Childress. "You had to stay present for every shot because if you got emotional or impatient the course would punish you."
Playing as an individual, junior Andrew McInerney fired a two-over 74 on Tuesday to jump nine spots up the leaderboard and finish tied for 22nd, the best result of his collegiate career.Â
The third-place finish was the best tournament result for the Spiders since the 2016-17 season, when Richmond won the Atlantic 10 Championship in April. The team will return to the course next Monday at Tuesday at the Autotrader Intercollegiate at Berkeley Hills Country Club in Duluth, Ga.
