Football Takes On Rival No. 2 James Madison Saturday In Harrisonburg

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond football team continues its streak of games against nationally-ranked opponents in Colonial Athletic Association play Saturday when the Spiders travel to Harrisonburg, Va. to face off against second-ranked James Madison. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m. at Bridgeforth Stadium.
The game will be televised on MASN locally and will be available for free on MadiZone through JMU. Additionally, the game will be broadcast on www.FloFootball.com as part of the CAA's broadcast package. The Spiders enter Saturday's game with a 5-5 overall record and a 4-2 mark in CAA play. Richmond is still fighting for a spot in the NCAA FCS playoffs with two games remaining but will need to pick up wins in its final two games to enhance its at-large chances. The Spiders are coming off a tough 35-28 loss at No. 18 Villanova last week that snapped a four-game CAA winning streak. Saturday's game will mark the sixth meeting against a nationally ranked opponent this year and the Spiders are 3-2 in such games so far this year.
Saturday's game marks the 37th meeting all-time between Richmond and James Madison. The series is evenly matched at 18-18 all-time but James Madison has won three-straight and five out of the last six meetings. Richmond is actually 9-8 all-time against the Dukes in Harrisonburg, including a 4-3 record over the last seven meetings dating back to 2007. Last year, James Madison posted a 63-10 victory over the Spiders at Robins Stadium. The Dukes returned the game's opening kickoff 93-yards for a touchdown and also had a 100-yard interception return for a touchdown in the first half as they opened to a 28-10 halftime lead. The Spiders passed for 256 yards in the loss but were limited to 81 yards on the ground on 36 carries. James Madison finished the game with 543 yards of offense, rushing for 200 and passing for 343.
The last time the Spiders traveled to Harrisonburg was during the 2017 season when the Dukes picked up a 20-13 victory. Former Spider quarterback Kyle Lauletta connected on 27-of-44 for 304 yards and a touchdown. Wide Receiver Tyler Wilkins caught 12 passes for 180 yards and a scored in the loss. The game was tied at 13-13 late in the fourth quarter before JMU scored the game-winning touchdown with 44 seconds remaining to remain No. 1 in the country that year.
Redshirt junior quarterback Joe Mancuso (Blairsville, Ga.) leads the offense having accounted for 22 touchdowns this year. Mancuso has connected on 119-of-183 for 1,654 yards and 12 touchdowns having started eight of 10 games this year. He also leads the Spiders on the ground rushing for 588 yards on 103 carries, scoring a team-high 10 touchdowns. He leads all CAA quarterbacks in rushing yards, rushing attempts and rushing touchdowns.
Graduate wide receiver Keyston Fuller (Griffin, Ga.) leads the team and ranks second in the CAA with 10 touchdown receptions as he has hauled in 47 passes for 876 yards. Fuller is just one touchdown shy of tying the Richmond single-season receiving touchdown mark and is looking to become just the fourth Spider all-time to reach the 1,000-yard receiving mark.
Graduate wide receiver Charlie Fessler (Erie, Pa.) leads the team with 54 receptions. Fessler has posted 693 receiving yards and two scores this year. The Spiders will be without their top three running backs this season due to injuries. True freshman Savon Smith (Winchester, Va.) will make his first start and has rushed for 224 yards on 35 carries this year, a 6.4 yards per carry average.
Defensively, freshman linebacker Tristan Wheeler (Bethlehem, Pa.) leads the team and ranks first among all freshmen in the nation in tackles with 86. Junior linebacker Tyler Dressler (Covington, Va.) is second on the team with 85 tackles while senior defensive lineman Maurice Jackson (Levittown, Pa.) leads the team with 7.5 sacks.
