11/29/2019 | Women's Basketball
CONWAY, S.C. – The University of Richmond women's basketball team hit 10 three-pointers in the final two quarters to knock off unbeaten Coastal Carolina, 79-67, in the Coastal Carolina Thanksgiving Classic Friday at the HTC Center.
"We kept talking about moving the basketball and I thought we did that really well in the second half," head coach Aaron Roussell said. "We knocked down shots to make 10 three-pointers in the second half but I thought our shot selection was great. To beat an undefeated team on the road in an environment like that is a great character trait for this team and I am really proud of them."
Sophomore Emma Squires (Kingston, Mass.) poured in a career-high 22 points, including 3-for-6 from downtown. Junior Alex Parson (North Chesterfield, Va.) added a season-high 18 points and sophomore Kate Klimkiewicz (Oakton, Va.) finished with 16 points. Sophomore Claire Holt (Hoover, Ala.) scored 13 points off the bench.
Richmond was on fire in the third and fourth quarters hitting 10 three-pointers and finished with a season-high 13. The Spiders were four away from tying a school record of 17 three-pointers set in 2000 against American. The Spiders improve to 5-2 on the season and handed Coastal Carolina (4-1) its first loss of the season.
Richmond finished the game shooting 43.9 percent from the floor off 25-for-57 and 41.9 from the three-point line off 13-of-31. The Spiders also were solid at the free throw line going 16-for-19 for 84.2 percent.
In the third quarter, Coastal Carolina took a seven-point lead at 34-27 before Richmond started its comeback. The Spiders would go on a 17-6 run sparked by multiple three-pointers to take the lead at 44-40 with 3:37 remaining in the quarter. Holt hit three-pointers and finished with 11 of her 12 points in the third. The Spiders score 28 points in the third quarter, a season high, outscoring Coastal Carolina 28-17.
Richmond would keep the Chanticleers at bay not letting them get closer than five points in the final quarter. With 4:10 left, Klimkiewicz made a layup plus the foul to give the Spiders a 14-point lead at 71-57. Richmond would close the game with free throws to make the final 79-67.
The Spiders fell behind 32-27 after two quarters against Coastal Carolina. Richmond battled inside but got outrebounded 22-18. Richmond had trouble shooting from the three-point line after hitting just 3-of-17 in the first two quarters. Klimkiewicz led the team with 10 points off 3-for-4 shooting and Squires added seven points.
Coastal Carolina built a 18-14 lead after the first quarter. The Chanticleers increased their lead to nine points after a couple of baskets from Aja Blount off the bench. A fast break three-pointer by Caitlin Roche forced a timeout for Richmond making the score 30-20.
The Spiders would dig in defensively and cut the lead to 30-25 off a 5-0 run. A couple of free throws by Klimkiewicz would help Richmond finish the second quarter on a 7-2 run to get within five points at 32-27.
Richmond will finish the Coastal Carolina Thanksgiving Classic with a neutral site game against Bradley on Sunday, Dec. 1, at 11:30 a.m.
