Late Richmond Comeback Falls Short Against Bradley

CONWAY, S.C. – The University of Richmond women's basketball team made a late fourth quarter comeback to get within one point but fell just short against Bradley in a neutral site game, 61-57, Sunday in the final game of the Coastal Carolina Thanksgiving Classic at HTC Center.
With one-minute remaining in the game, junior Alex Parson (North Chesterfield, Va.) drained a three-pointer to get Richmond (5-3) within one point at 56-55. Bradley responded quickly as Lasha Petree scored on a fast break layup to lead 58-55 with 53 seconds left. The Spiders missed a shot on the next possession and were forced to foul. Bradley missed a couple free throws in the end but Richmond fell short 61-57.
Parson led the team with 15 points, including 11 in the fourth quarter. Sophomore Kate Klimkiewicz (Oakton, Va.) finished with 10 points and five rebounds. Sophomore Aniyah Carpenter (Baltimore, Md.) added 10 points. Senior Jaide Hinds-Clarke (Westwood, N.J.) grabbed eight rebounds and came away with five steals.
Freshman Elaina Chapman (Richmond, Va.) pulled down a season-high nine rebounds. The Spiders battled on the boards with both teams coming away with 36 rebounds. Richmond forced Bradley into 21 turnovers and came away with 12 steals.
Bradley was led by Lasha Petree who finished with 19 points, 17 in the last two quarters. Chelsea Brackmann had a double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds.
Bradley turned the game by outscoring Richmond 26-11 in the third quarter. The Braves used a 16-3 run to open the third quarter to take the lead at 33-32. Bradley shot 64.3 percent in the third quarter and hit 3-of-6 from the three-point line. Petree scored 10 points in the third quarter alone to help Bradley build a six-point lead to enter the final quarter.
The Spiders scored 20 points in the final quarter but it wasn't enough in a four-point loss. Richmond trailed by double-digits multiple times but kept fighting. The largest deficit in the game was 56-43 with 3:42 remaining. The Spiders went on a 12-0 run to get within one point but never got closer.
In a physical first two quarters, Richmond led 26-17 thanks to a solid defensive effort holding Bradley to just 25 percent from the floor (6-for-24). The Spiders held Bradley's leader scorer Lasha Petree to just two points off 1-for-5 shooting at halftime.
Both teams combined for 18 fouls that slowed down the action. Junior Kailyn Fee (Vienna, Va.) was a spark off the bench hitting two three-pointers to lead the team with six points. Carpenter added five points and sophomore Emma Squires (Kingston, Mass.) scored five points but was in foul trouble.
The Spiders jumped out to a 15-4 lead after the first quarter. Richmond held Bradley to just 1-for-13 shooting in the first quarter. Richmond used a 10-2 run to open up a 13-3 lead with 4:18 left in the quarter. Squires scored all five points in the first.
The Braves cut the lead to 20-13 off a jumper by Nyjah White at the 4:38 mark. The Spiders answered with a 6-0 run off a three-pointer by Fee and a three-point play by Carpenter. Bradley would score two baskets to end the half down just 26-17.
Richmond will travel to Princess Anne, Maryland for a road game against Maryland Eastern-Shore on Thursday, Dec. 5, at 6 p.m.
