WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The University of Richmond men's tennis team took four players to the William & Mary fall Invitational from Nov. 1-3.
The Spiders came away with a win in singles and doubles during the three-day tournament.
Sophomore John Walsh (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) won the first set against Zach Smith (Penn) 6-4 but lost the next two sets 6-1, 6-3. Walsh fell on the final day against VCU's Rayane Stable, 6-3, 6-2.
Freshman Nick Mueller (Winchester, Va.) earned a third set win against Jonah Jurick (Penn), 2-6, 6-2, 6-3. Mueller lost his other match and finished 1-1 in singles.
Sophomore Alex Wernink (Glen Cove, N.Y.) went 0-3 in singles. Wernink fell on the final day to Navy's Peter Lohrbach, 7-6 (7), 6-1. He lost the first set tiebreaker 9-7 and couldn't recover in the second set falling 6-1. Freshman Ike Simon (Potomac, Md.) was 0-2 in singles losing to players from Penn and William & Mary.
In doubles, Walsh and Wenink earned a close win against William & Mary's duo Brailovsky and Talcott, 9-8. In their second match, they lost a tiebreaker against Gupta and Parikh, 8-7 (6).
Mueller and Simon lost both of their doubles matches against teams from Penn and William & Mary.
UR will finish the fall season with a tournament hosted by Wake Forest from Nov. 8-10 in Winston-Salem, N.C.
