Erwin Clinches 4-3 Win at Delaware

ELKTON, Md. – The University of Richmond men's tennis team won the doubles point and split singles matches to earn a 4-3 win at Delaware Sunday at Elkton Indoor Tennis.
"This was a great start to our season for the guys," head coach Houston Barrick said. "We got off to a solid start after winning the doubles point and battled in singles to come away with the win. I was really proud of Campbell Erwin for clinching the match and look forward to watching this team grow throughout the season."
With the Spiders leading 3-2, sophomore Campbell Erwin (San Antonio, Texas) won in straight sets against Delaware's Curran Verma, 6-0, 6-2 at No. 6 singles.
The Spiders started the match by winning two of the three doubles matches. Delaware earned a 6-1 win at No. 1 doubles as James Wilkinson and Liam Hedlund took down 60th ranked doubles pair sophomore Josh Keitelman (Chevy Chase, Md.) and senior Matt Fernandez (Richmond, Va.).
Senior George Lovitt (Marvin, N.C.) and sophomore John Walsh (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) won at No. 2 doubles with a 6-4 win against Luis Molina and Justice Jones.
In the final doubles match, senior Klein Evans (Raleigh, N.C.) and Erwin gave Richmond a 1-0 lead after defeating Guilherme Valdoleiros and Nathan Benyowitz, 7-5, at No. 3 doubles.
In singles, Delaware tied the match after Wilkinson won in straight sets against Fernandez, 7-5, 6-1 at No. 1 singles. The Blue Hens made it 2-1 after Molina earned a 7-6 (0), 6-4, win against Evans at No. 2 singles.
Lovitt tied the match at 2-2 with a straight-sets win at No. 4 singles against Hedlund, 6-1, 7-6 (3). Walsh gave the Spiders a 3-2 lead with a 7-6 (3), 6-4 win at No. 3 singles.
In the final match, freshman Ricky Bell (Rockville, Md.) lost a tough third set match against Jones, 7-6 (4), 3-6, 10-4 at No. 6 singles.
Richmond will head to James Madison for a non-conference battle in Harrisonburg on Friday, Jan. 24, at 3 p.m.
