11/05/2019 | Women's Basketball
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The University of Richmond women's basketball team outscored UNCG 37-26 in the last two quarters to win its 2019-20 season opener 70-62 on the road at UNCG Tuesday night at Fleming Gym. Senior Jaide Hinds-Clarke (Westwood, N.J.) led the team with 14 points, six rebounds and five steals.
Richmond improves to 1-0 on the season and is 8-3 in its last 11 season openers. It marks the first win for new head coach Aaron Roussell.
"It was a gritty win for us," Roussell said. "We somehow found a way and I am really proud of the way we took care of the basketball with only 12 turnovers. I also thought our bench was huge with Elaina Chapman and Kate Klimkiewicz. We are going to enjoy this one."
The Spiders won the turnover battle forcing 24 miscues from the Spartans. Richmond made the most of it scoring 21 points off turnovers. Bench points was also a key factor as the Spiders scored 34.
Freshman Elaina Chapman (Richmond, Va.) and sophomore Kate Klimkiewicz (Oakton, Va.) combined to score 22 points. Chapman in her first collegiate game scored nine points and grabbed five rebounds. Klimkiewicz, who become eligible moments before the trip, added 13 points, including 2-for-4 from the three-point line.
Sophomore Aniyah Carpenter (Baltimore, Md.) added nine points and junior Alex Parson (Chesterfield, Va.) scored seven points.
The Spiders trailed at halftime 36-33 but settled in after UNCG held a nine-point lead early in the first quarter. Richmond outscored UNCG, 21-16 in the third quarter to head into the fourth quarter with a two-point lead.
In the fourth quarter, Hinds-Clarke gave Richmond a 57-54 lead after hitting a three-pointer with 5:40 remaining. With 2:56 on the clock, UNCG cut the lead to two after a free throw by Te'ja Twitty but Hinds-Clarke made a layup to build the lead back to 63-59.
The Spiders would hit free throw down the stretch with Klimkiewicz hitting two and sophomore Molly Mraz (Erie, Pa.) also went 2-for-2. Richmond finished the game 11-for-15 at the free throw line.
Richmond will continue its road trip with a game at Charlotte on Saturday, Nov. 9, at 4 p.m.
