Richmond Falls On The Road At Charlotte
11/09/2019 | Women's Basketball
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Despite a career-high 19 points from sophomore Emma Squires (Kingston, Mass.), the University of Richmond women's basketball team fell on the road at Charlotte, 78-59, Saturday at Halton Arena.
"We had some good stretches today, especially in the fourth quarter but obviously a pretty frustrating afternoon," head coach Aaron Roussell said. "We were a bit better on the boards, which was a positive but we just gave up too many easy baskets. We have to find a way to get better defensively. This team has a lot of potential, but we need to clean things up in a few areas before we can expect to get there."
Richmond drops to 1-1 on the season and Charlotte improves to 2-0. Squires scored a career-high 19 points off 7-for-11 shooting in 24 minutes. Sophomore Aniyah Carpenter (Baltimore, Md.) added nine points and senior Jaide Hinds-Clarke (Westwood, N.J.) scored nine points. Freshman Elaina Chapman (Richmond, Va.) scored seven points and grabbed four rebound off the bench.
The 49ers had two players score 15-plus points in Jade Phillips (17 points) and Octavia Jett-Wilson (19 points). Charlotte scored 45 bench points and outscored Richmond 48-24 in points in the paint. The Spiders turned the ball over 26 times in the loss. The Spiders were solid from the free throw line shooting 76.2 percent off 16-for-21.

Richmond struggled from the three-point line shooting just 2-for-10 and committed 13 turnovers. Charlotte went 3-for-6 from downtown and controlled the game after a strong first quarter.
The Spiders trailed 17-9 after one quarter and only shot 3-for-11 from the field. Squires started the game with a three-pointer to give Richmond a 3-0 lead. The 49ers answered with a 10-2 run to lead Richmond 10-5 with 5:43 left in the quarter. Squires hit two free throws but Charlotte ended the quarter on a 7-2 run to lead by eight.
In the second quarter, the Spiders got within five at 21-16 off a layup by Chapman with 7:34 on the clock. Charlotte pushed the lead back to 11 at 27-16 off a layup from Octavia Jett-Wilson. Richmond couldn't get any closer going into halftime down 12 at 34-22.
